Be Best In The World – Home Business – Any Business

28 10 2009

Be Best In The WorldBeing Best In the world at something – at one thing – matters so much! The fact of the matter is for your home-based business nothing matters as much as identifying what you and your home business are going to be the Best In The World At!  Our culture celebrates and loves superstars: Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Tiger Woods, Oprah. Sports, business, Music, Hollywood! In business – top salespeople, top performing divisions, #1 this and #1 that! We all look at lists and want to know who is on top and – who for that moment is the best! Nobody except rabid fans ever remembers who lost the super bowl! OK so how does this apply to your business, franchise or home-based business?  Stick with me for a few  minutes!

As much as I love Chris Anderson’s book – The Long Tail.  This about the opposite extreme of that graph that starts high on the left and slides down to the long tail (short stuff) way out on the right!  If Chris is about getting the long tail – Being the Best In The worlkd is about Getting the Tall Head!  It’s about getting the juicy-est meat of the market!

Winners win big because everyone loves a winner! Number one producers continue to win sales contests because everyone loves a winner. First companies to a market niche dominate a niche and continue to dominate it because everyone loves a winner!  Everyone loves the #1 guy/gal/company in the market.

This is really all about a statistical law – Zipf’s Law – #1 in the market will always outperform #2 by 2-3 times!

Now apply this to your life.  Your child has a rare life-threatening illness – do you want #2, second best or an also ran?  You have a very unique job that needs to be done and you are reviewing resumes to hire a special candidate for the role.  Do you tell your assistant – “give me the second or third best resume” or “give me an average resume…”  No you say “Give me the best!”
OK so now you are saying – “Glenn… yeah but … how to I compete with… so and so…?”  Here is the key for you and your home business. Marketing is not about mass marketing – it is about niche markets! There are millions of niche or micro-markets! This is about niche target prospects! Best is no longer an objective mass term – it is specialized!   The world is getting larger and larger – we have access to more now in a growing interconnected world than ever before! But specialization is helping keep the world smaller and smaller – manageable – allows us to avoid information/selection overload. You now can define your world – what you want – to be exactly what you desire from anywhere in the world! See How

You have the idea… you know your passions, your skills, your success track.  Pick your niche – identify your first – one thing and now go out and be the best at your one thing!

Baby Boomer Entrepreneurs — Go All In

27 10 2009

Baby Boomer EntrepreneurWhen you mention the term entrepreneur most people get an image of a 20 something working from home on a web business or out in the garage developing a new technology product.  According to a recent study by the Kauffman Foundation in the United States people between the ages of 55 and 64 have had a higher rate of entrepreneurial activity than those age 20 to 34 in every year between 1996 and 2007.  And according to the Small Business Association Baby Boomers — those born between 1946 and 1964 — start small businesses at a higher rate than any other age group! This group really is approaching the home-based business industry with an All-IN attitude!

As a coach in the Direct Sales and Marketing Industry we work every day with people in building a Home Business that serves their lives.  We see the front end of a coming huge shift right now in the Home Business – Internet Marketing market segment.  The baby boomer generation and the huge numbers of people in that age group are coming to the home-based business industry in enormous numbers right now. They bring a different mindset, set of skills and approach to the table.  It is very clearly a natural business process following the product life cycle and adoption curve.

Read more about the product adoption lifecycle and home-based business here.

Baby Boomers are the rat-in-the-python, we are the hump in the bell shaped curve, at our age we do display the behaviors of the Early Majority: Careful consumers who avoid risk, purchase after it has been proven by early adopters. We do seek out and rely on recommendations from early adopters who have proven the product. We are motivated by joining a “community” of satisfied users. This economic recession has brought baby boomer and mid-life entrepreneurs out in huge numbers motivated by the chunks taken out of their wealth in real estate, 401Ks and job security risks.  A home business is a viable additional income stream and millions of US baby boomers see the opportunity and are stepping into the business.

Dane Stangler, a senior analyst and author of the Kauffman Foundation study, says baby boomer entrepreneurship is likely to continue and grow throughout the current recession, both out of necessity after a layoff and because some baby boomers have always wanted to work for themselves.
Baby Boomers bring a long resource list with us to the industry: established networks, business skills developed over decades, access to more financial resources and a longer view of business and economic cycles.  Baby Boomers are a formidable group and will bring huge change and opportunity to the industry.

If you are a Baby Boomer you can see and learn more about a growing community designed to perfectly accompany your skills and assist you in accomplishing your business and lifestyle goals here. http://www.beaSuccessfulEntrepreneur.com

Getting Things Done!

18 01 2009

From time to time I write summaries about books I have read or that I am currently reading. It is our goal to publish here comments and summaries about books and articles that have application to our business as well as how to apply things in it!

Today’s post is about one of my all-time favorite business books. As a leader in my previous corporate executive roles it was on my required reading list for my entire management staff.

This post is about the book Execution: The Discipline of Getting Things Done <<<< Buy it here Direct from Amazon.

Written by Ram Charan , executive coach and noted expert on business strategy and Larry Bossidy , Chairman of Honeywell International, and prior to this role he is widely credited with guiding Allied Signal to one of the world’s most admired companies and producing 31 consecutive quarters of EPS growth in excess of 13%!

Business research shows that companies that outperformed their competition excelled at four primary business practices, Execution, Strategy, Culture and Structure. This book is the definitive bible on excelling at the key business practice of Execution. It is not only the biggest issue facing business and business owners today but unlike other management disciplines it really has not been explained satisfactorily. Stop and think a moment. Strategy – so much information on strategy exists it is no longer a challenge. Google both Business strategy and business execution and you will see there are ten times as many results for strategy. Similar results for Leadership development, Innovation, Culture – endless information.

Mentioned over and over throughout the book – the difference between a company and its competitor is the ability to execute. If your competitors are executing better than you are, they are beating you in the here and now and if that’s happening you won’t even get the time to see if an elaborate strategy plays out.

Execution – Getting Things Done is the biggest unaddressed issue in the business world today. It’s absence is the biggest single obstacle to success and the cause of most disappointments mistakenly attributed to other causes. Here is the fundamental problem: people think of executing as the details and tactics of a business and leaders delegate this while they focus on the “bigger issues” rather than getting deeply engaged in the process of execution as a discipline, building systems and embedding it in the strategy, the goals and the culture!

Although I may refer to Execution as Getting Things Done it is more than that it is a set of behaviors, processes and techniques that you must master to gain a competitive advantage! A system of getting things done through, questioning, analysis, documentation and follow through. With the tragic and tumultuous events unfolding right now in our economy – the coming depression – yes you read it here that dreaded D word – many companies will have to tear up their operating plans, prepare new ones and fill gaps in revenue and make major cost adjustments. The winners that emerge from this will be the companies that
adjusted quickly, built clear plans and then followed through and completed those plans!

Whats is this all about and how in the world does it apply to a home based business you may be asking. I would propose to you it is not the what of what you do that drives your success such as your strategy on lead generation and customer service, but more precisely how you execute and most importantly that you get things done and completed.

Ask yourself:

Do you just jump in and start working on whatever is in front of you day-to-day, maybe reading your goals daily to build the power of attraction and feel that is what it is about or do you follow a clearly documented daily process? Do you document what you do, how you did it and then track and work your way through the steps? It sounds simple – eh – maybe even a bit boring given the attention out there to “lifestyle” in our industry.

Do you have numerous unfinished projects on your desk because you are working on what you determined today is urgent. Be real, be authentic, this business involves detailed work, attention to detail and you have to do it OR find the right people who can do it for you and get the work done. Don’t accept the excuse of I’m too busy to work on that.

Let’s look briefly at the Building blocks of execution as outlined by Charan and Bossidy:

  • Building Block One: The leader’s seven essential behaviors
  • Building Block Two: Creating the framework for cultural change
  • Building Block Three: Have the right people in the right place

In this day and age of network marketing and home-based businesses those building blocks at first glance may seem to not apply. Your challenge is to read the book and look for ways to apply the foundation building blocks to your home based business.

  • How to develop leadership behavior for your team
  • How to build a culture for your team and
  • Getting the right people in the right place

Spend a few minutes and focus on the book ending conclusion LETTER TO A NEW LEADER.

Outstanding points and questions:

  1. You will be pulled in every direction as people want you to… spend time here, try this, participate in that… BUT running your processes must be at the top of your priority list.
  2. Are your resources allocated in proportion to opportunities or does every opportunity get some resources and none get enough? is your plan straightforward, concise and easily understood. You have a budget, but do you have the action plan the budget should represent?
  3. Make sure you and your team understand your customers! Understanding your customers is the base of business success. ( More about this in a coming blog…. )
  4. Look for ways to implement initiatives in your business to improve productivity – we all have only 24 hours in a day.
  5. Maintain your intellectual honesty so that you are always realistic. See things as they are not just the way you want them to be. Build bridges and plans to get there!
