Earlier today I was reading and thinking on a quote I posted to Twitter. It was from Arnold Glasgow:
Success is simple. Do what’s right, the right way, at the right time (for the right reasons – my add)
I do love the simplicity in that statement. And yet it really brought up some old thoughts and challenges I faced in my prior business roles. There were many times I thought about the comparison of a manager and leader made by Warren Bennis and Bert Nanus in their book Leaders: Their Strategies for Taking Charge.
“Managers do things right, leaders do the right things.”
The struggle I have is in looking at that statement literally. It has GREAT meaning when you dissect it. Managers must have skill sets in doing things right – excellently! Leaders must have skills of selecting the vision, articulating it and keeping focused on it. I preferred to take the interpretation of inclusiveness – in a large company you can have great managers with those manager skill sets and great leaders with leader skill sets. In an age of specialization – many people had one set without the other. Discussions many a time settled on how they were exclusive roles… you either were a great manager OR a great leader. I always took offense with this and still do – even though I value and agree with the pieces of it. Gosh I can’t count the times when in C-Level meetings and discussions there was always somebody using this quote — many times it seemed it was almost a side-handed complement to a good manager in our organization. One who worked tirelessly – was an excellent process manager – a real pro at how things were done right. Usually the flip side was someone had an issue with the manager’s leadership skills or people skills.
For me – for true lasting success – this is not an either or option – It is not about being either a leader or manager. The Glasgow quote above really drove it home clearly for me again today for my own business. As a home business entrepreneur who must wear many hats it is neither an Either-Or situation nor a select one of three option. It is an all three proposition. For lasting success – for increasing results over time you must:
Do the right things in the right way and at the right time.
This has great relevance too – to my earlier posting on The Top 5 Things For A Business Owner. That post is about identifying the top 5 things (the right things). Take a look and then take it to the next level — for success to really grow for the home business entrepreneur, you must also do those things right AND at the right time. It is the what, the how and the when of business success – when you throw in the why and give it all true meaning for your own self – you have the perfect success recipe simply stated.
If you are a home business entrepreneur and are struggling in this economy with your products or business model. I invite you to look closely at our model – It is setting growth records in this global economic crisis. This success is not based upon delivering a service or product because of the pain of a global economic meltdown but rather because it shows a clear path of financial empowerment.
